We all have good days and bad days, and sometimes we struggle with giving our best output. While we are willing to work hard, our productivity can be impacted by various factors such as health issues, stress, energy levels, etc. Nonetheless, we can still achieve a fair amount of consistency in our everyday work if we follow some basic rules. If you have been experiencing work related issues of late, here are three simple steps to increase productivity.
Take frequent breaks: This is necessary for both physical and mental wellbeing. It has been shown in research studies that spending long hours at the desk increases the risk of health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression. Breaks are also necessary to refresh your mind. Your brain works quite like a processor and is continuously involved in reasoning, analysis, decision making, problem solving and coming up with new ideas. If you work without breaks, your mind will eventually become fatigued and lose focus. With short breaks, you can reset your brain and start afresh. It is advisable that you take 10-20 minutes break every 45-60 minutes. You can utilize the breaks for any activity such as doing yoga, exercising, cooking a quick meal, talking to a family member/friend, doing household chores, etc.
Follow a schedule: There are quite a few tasks that need to be accomplished in a day. If you don’t have a proper plan, you are likely to get confused and forget important tasks. A detailed work schedule can simplify things for you, as you will know exactly which task needs to be done at a given time. A schedule will allow you to prioritize things, so that you can focus on the most important tasks first. This can include both your professional commitments and your household tasks. Following a schedule will give you clarity about the day ahead, which in turn will boost your self-confidence and reduce stress levels. It will also help avoid bad habits such as procrastination.
Stay on track with a to-do list: Even with proper plans, things might not always work out as expected. Sometimes it may take longer to complete a given task or something unexpected or more urgent might come up. There can be several other reasons that can push you behind schedule. To manage such situations, it’s always better to have a to-do list. A to-do list will allow you to track your progress, so that you can be in control of the situation. It will give structure to your work, allowing you to be more organized, efficient, and productive. You will also not feel overwhelmed with approaching deadlines.
These, of course, will require dedication and changes in practices from our end but they are all great habits to develop. It may take some time to implement these in your daily work schedule. You may also have to make some adjustments based on the nature of work. You need to be patient and firmly believe that these strategies can work to your advantage. With regular practice, you will be able to boost your productivity and keep it consistent, day after day.
